Entrance
The Vittoriale degli Italiani is a complex consisting of buildings, streets, squares, museums, auditoriums, an outdoor theatre, gardens and waterways. It unfolds over a wide area of nine hectares on a hilly area in a panoramic position. It was erected on the shores of Lake Garda by Gabriele D'Annunzio between 1921 and 1938, to celebrate his life as a poet-soldier and the achievements of the Italians during the First World War. A double swing door (122cm each) in the square in front of the Vittoriale leads into the building. Following this there is a flat stretch with a hard ground surface (10 m) taking to the ticket office (desk h 113 cm). Following this there is an access turnstile (net opening 90 cm) and finally 10 steps (h 16 cm) leads to the beginning of the tour.

Once past the turnstile, in alternative to the 10 steps, persons with disabilities can take an accessible path: at a double swing gate (width 118 cm each) and via a bell on the left side (h 90 cm from the ground) visitors can call personnel to open the gate. After about 10 meters, a double swing gate (97 cm each) takes visitors to the beginning of the tour.

Reception
In piazzetta Dalmata, the heart of the complex of the Vittoriale, there are:

  • a bookshop (counter h 90 cm)
  • the cloakroom (counter h 90 cm).

At the ticket office and main buildings, museum professionals are able to give information and hospitality.

Exhibition layout
From the entrance, taking the path that leads towards the piazzetta Dalmata, on the right side is sited the outdoor theatre and the Museo D’Annunzio Segreto (D'Annunzio Secret Museum).

The Anfiteatro is an outdoor theatre that hosts a prestigious series of shows every summer; climbing one step (h 16 cm), it is possible to reach the upper part of the amphitheatre.

The D’Annunzio Segreto is reached via 15 steps (h 14 cm), or alternatively along a sloping stretch (length 15 meters, slope 7%). The entrance has a swing door (width 90 cm). The museum houses personal items of D'Annunzio and his mistresses. Six screens (h 150 cm from the ground) show period films from the Luce Institute and RAI Historical archives (in Italian audio commentary with English subtitles); a touch screen multimedia station provides details about the great passions of D'Annunzio.

Continuing along the path uphill (variable slope from 6% to 10%, without steps), it can be reached piazzetta Dalmata, overlooking important buildings such as the Prioria (Priory), the Museo D'Annunzio Eroe (D’Annunzio Hero Museum) and the Auditorium.

The Prioria is the historic house-museum of D'Annunzio; to get there it is necessary to climb 2 steps (h 15 cm), a swing door (width 65 cm) and a further 7 steps (h 17 cm). The exhibition space consists of 18 rooms spread over several floors, connected by various series of steps.

Piazzetta Dalmata also faces the building that houses the D'Annunzio Eroe (D’Annunzio Hero Museum) and the Auditorium, on the first floor. Both are accessible from the main entrance climbing 2 steps (h 16 cm), past two double swing doors side by side (97 cm each) and 3 flights of stairs of 28 steps in total (h 15 cm).

Alternatively, visitors with motor disabilities can use a secondary location not signposted: starting from piazzetta Dalmata along an uphill path made of earth and grass, at times uneven (length about 50 m, variable slope from 6% to 10%) ; then there are 8 consecutive steps (h 15 cm) which can be climbed via a platform stair lift. A double swing door (width 95 cm and 40 cm one another) takes visitors inside the Auditorium, where a video (with audio commentary in Italian without subtitles) is projected. The hall has 180 seats (seat h 41 cm) and on the hall's dome hangs the Ansaldo SVA airplane from the famous flight over Vienna. There is also a small room with two architectural models (h 62 cm from the ground) reproducing the Mausoleo of D'Annunzio (D'Annunzio Mausoleum).

Coming out of the main entrance of the Auditorium (leading to two 71 cm doors each), visitors can reach, without hindrance, the Museo D'Annunzio Eroe (80 cm swinging door), which houses historical relics, weapons and flags.

From piazzetta Dalmata walking up viale di Aligi and climbing 47 non-consecutive steps (h 16 cm) visitors reach the Fontana del Delfino (Dolphin Fountain). From here following a further 48 non-consecutive steps it is possible to reach the building that houses the D'Annunzio MAS 96 boat-museum (the front door with two swing doors 114 cm each). After climbing an additional 60 non-consecutive steps, it is possible to arrive to the top of the Vittoriale, where the Mausoleo and D'Annunzio’s tomb are situated.

From MAS 96, after descending 44 non-consecutive steps it can be reached the Nave Puglia (ship), which houses the Museo di Bordo in its hull bottom, with precious period models of warships. From Nave Puglia it can be observed the Acquapazza and Acquasavia streams, which are united downstream in the violin-shaped Laghetto delle Danze (pond of the Dances). It is possible to get to the lake via paths with uneven ground and steep slopes.

Downstream of the Vittoriale is an area used as a lemon house and orchard, that can be reached from piazzetta Dalmata via sloping paths, at times with an uneven surface and various series of steps.

Direction signs
Along the various paths there are directional arrows written in large letters (at least 7 cm) and well contrasted.
