Getting around
The Sacro Monte di Varese, an UNESCO world heritage, is a devotional complex that includes the Via Sacra, with its 14 chapels, and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte. The Via Sacra (about 2 km walkable only on foot) is uphill with variable but still challenging slopes, with cobblestone surface at times uneven; the route is not recommended for people in wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties.
Close to the First Chapel is the Monsignor Macchi Exhibition Centre which provides reception services to visitors (information material, possibility to book guided tours). At the end of the 2 km route, you enter the small medieval village of Santa Maria del Monte where you can walk the ancient covered streets, visit the Baroffio Museum, the Lodovico Pogliaghi House Museum and the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte. Some streets of the village have challenging slopes and uneven paving in cobblestone.
The Via Sacra
Along the Via Sacra, there are 14 chapels built around 1600 on a project by Giuseppe Bernascone, an architect from Varese. The chapels, representing the mysteries of the Rosary, are adorned with paintings and large sculptures.
Each chapel has some steps before the entrance.
The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is located at the end of the Via Sacra. It was built starting from the year 1100 but it has undergone numerous changes over the years, until the end of the 1800s. The secondary entrance is accessible and has two consecutive doors: the first is a two leaf door (71 cm wide each), the second one is a hinged door (100 cm wide). They both lead to the left aisle. You then pass 3 consecutive steps (15 cm high each) or alternatively a ramp (400 cm long, slope of 7%).
The sanctuary has three naves that can be visited without obstacles; the church has benches with kneelers and chairs (seat height: 47 cm). To access the altar and the choir, it is necessary to pass 1 step (14 cm high). On the right aisle there is the "Cappella delle Beate" which can be reached by passing a step (14 cm high), a double leaf door (63 cm wide each) and other 10 consecutive steps (14 cm high each); the chapel has benches with kneelers (seat height: 47 cm).
In the left aisle there is the altar of the "Presentazione di Gesù al tempio" decorated with wooden statues by Andrea Prestinari.
Orientation signage
Along the path of the Sacro Monte there are directional arrows with large and well contrasted lettering (at least 7 cm).
