Exhibition layout
Palazzo Ducale, the ancient residence of the Gonzagas, is a large area (35,000 square meters) with about 500 rooms, 15 courtyards, squares and indoor gardens. The building also contains other important works of art by Foppa, Morone, Giulio Romano, Rubens and works belonging to other art collections.
The exhibition unfolds mainly in the 36 halls on the first floor, called Piano Nobile. In some passage ways between the halls and stairs there are slopes which can be surmounted via inclined platform lifts and ramps. Room 8 called "Pisanello" there are 7 steps (h 15 cm) which can be overcome via a sloping ramp (length 8 meters; 6% gradient). In room 36 there is a ramp (length 3 meters; 6% gradient).
Inside the rooms there are some seats (seat h 47 cm). The spaces are generally wide and unobstructed.
On the ground floor of the castle there is a large area for temporary exhibitions (swing door 93 cm) which is divided into several rooms all accessible without obstacles.
The Camere degli Sposi, one of the highlights of the palace, is located on the first floor of the Castle. From the lift, visitors pass an automatic sliding door (92 cm) and a ramp (length 40 cm; 4% gradient) and reach a hall that serves as a foyer. This room is equipped with benches (seat h 47 cm) and video with audio commentary in Italian (with subtitles in Italian and English); from here visitors enter the Camere degli Sposi.
