Exhibition layout
Santa Giulia is known as the "Museum of the City", because the history of Brescia is brought to to life there. The tour unfolds through two itineraries, on an exhibition area of about 14,000 square meters.
The first itinerary is dedicated to the history of the Monastery, whose structures document the different periods of the history of the city. The structures are the church of San Salvatore, Santa Maria in Solario, the Choir of the nuns, the church of Santa Giulia and the Renaissance cloisters.
The second itinerary, which is integrated with the previous one, displays materials and works from the city of Brescia and from the territory, ordered in sections ranging from prehistoric age ti the nineteenth century. The exhibition is on three floors: the lower ground floor, ground and first floor.
The two itineraries are generally accessible without obstacles: on the various floors, some rooms or spaces are connected by steps, which may be climbed either via lifting platforms, stairlifts and inclined ramps (with variable gradients from 6% to 12%).
There are architectural barriers only in the following cases: the Basilica of San Salvatore has a step (h 16 cm); the church of Santa Maria in Solario can be reached from the cloisters past 7 consecutive steps (h 14 cm) and a double swinging door (65 cm each); the Nuns' Choir can only be reached via 3 flights of stairs with a total of 39 steps (h 12 cm) and then an inclined ramp (length 230 cm, gradient 7%).
Itinerary 2 offers a tour specially designed for visually impaired visitors. Near some works there are 1:1 scale copies accessible to touch and short texts printed in Braille provide information on features of the exhibition.
On the ground floor, inside the Domus, there are chairs and benches (h 44 cm).
