Getting around
Built as a military outpost by the Romans, in the eighth century it became a monastery of the Benedictine nuns who remained there until the fifteenth century. Donated to FAI in 1977, it has been a UNESCO Heritage site since 2011 together with the nearby Castrum of Castelseprio as a testimony of the Lombards in Italy.
The complex includes the church, the medieval tower and the archaeological area.
The portico of the former monastery can be accessed by passing 9 consecutive steps (15 cm high each); from the porch , a step (15 cm high) and a gate (101 cm wide) lead you to the courtyard, to the church, and to the medieval tower and the former monastery where you can find a restaurant and a visitor centre.
Alternatively, the complex can be accessed by passing through a double-leaf gate (170 cm wide each) open only on weekends. People with motor disabilities may request the opening of the gate at the visitor centre.

Reception
The visitor centre is opposite the church. The entrance has 3 steps (19 cm high each) and a double leaf door (45 cm wide each). In the hall there is the InfoPoint (counter height: 128 cm) and a bookshop.
The FAI staff offers information and reception services.

Church of Santa Maria
The church, with a single apsed hall, was built between the eighth and thirteenth centuries AD. The variety of the external wall is the proof of the tormented history that the church has undergone over the centuries.
The entrance to the church has 2 steps (9 cm and 20 cm high) and a hinged door (128 cm wide).
Many tombs and a crypt were found in the church and they can be reached by passing 13 steps (20 cm high each). Above the crypt there is a removable wooden stage used for cultural events. You reach the stage via 3 steps (18 cm high each). The church has chairs (seat height: 44 cm).

The tower and its frescoes
The late Roman tower, used by the Benedictine as a chapel, has ancient frescoes.
The tower develops on several levels.
From the courtyard you enter the first room of the tower through a passageway (103 cm wide), 11 consecutive steps (16 cm high each) and a hinged door (84 cm wide). Passing another 7 steps (16 cm high each) and a door (84 cm wide) you reach another frescoed room. The last level of the tower can be reached via two flights of stairs (13 steps, 16 cm high each), 2 more steps (20 cm high each) and a hinged door (74 cm wide).

The Archaeological area
We don't suggest people with mobility difficulties to visit the complex because it is full of obstacles.
The external passages (access road to the church and path along the walls) have a gravel surface and at times a slight slope.

"The kitchen of the Sun" Restaurant
The restaurant is in the ancient refectory of the monastery. The restaurant can be accessed via two double leaf doors (51 cm wide each).
The restaurant (counter height: 100 cm) has rectangular and square tables (clear space below: 71 cm).

Toilet facilities
Toilets are in the courtyard before the visitor centre. You access the toilet by passing a step (4 cm high) and a double leaf door (44 cm wide each). The disabled toilet has the following characteristics:

  • toilet with hinged door (80 cm wide)
