Getting there by public transport
Sirmione is connected to Brescia, Verona and other villages on Lake Garda by various bus lines of the Arriva company.
Several buses stop at the end of Viale Marconi, where the old town of Sirmione begins. For information, please visit the Arriva website https://www.arriva.it/gardalake
For information on accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, we suggest you contact Arriva in advance.

Sirmione can be reached by the ferries of the Gestione Navigazione Laghi company, which connects the villages on the shore of the lake.

The service can welcome passengers with reduced mobility. For more information, please visit: http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/assistenza-disabili.aspx

Parking area
The archaeological area of the Grotte di Catullo is located in an exceptional panoramic position, at the end of the Sirmione peninsula. The area is part of the old town of Sirmione, an area closed to traffic of cars except for residents and guests of accommodation facilities. Disabled pass holders can freely access this area by car, without any authorization, and can reach the Grotte di Catullo directly: the disabled person can get off in front of the entrance, while the car must be parked a few meters away, free of charge, in a reserved area with gravel surface and well-connected paved paths.

Alternatively, the Grotte di Catullo can be reached on foot, walking through the centre of Sirmione and following the signs: the walk can be difficult for people with reduced mobility, as it is about 1 km long, on paved roads with slopes at times steep. In this case you can park in Viale Marconi, about 150 meters from the old town of Sirmione, where there is a large public parking with blue stripes, with 7 places for disabled pass holders (the disabled pass allows you to park for free even on the blue stripes).

During summer there is a private transport service with an electric train from Piazza Piatti, at the Terme di Catullo (Aquaria), to the Grotte di Catullo. The carriages are not equipped for the transport of persons in wheelchairs. For information, please contact: www.iltreninodellegrotte@libero.it

Information for visitors
The ticket is free for the disabled visitor and his/her carer, by showing a document confirming the disability. The visit is free; brochures in various languages are available with a map of the archaeological area and they contain the essential information to explore it.

Exhibition itinerary
The exhibition itinerary includes the archaeological area called Grotte di Catullo and the Archaeological Museum of Sirmione.

Grotte di Catullo
In the archaeological area of the Grotte di Catullo it is possible to visit the remains of one of the largest Roman villas in northern Italy. Located in a panoramic position, it dominates the entire basin of Lake Garda from above. The villa occupies an area of about 2 hectares and is surrounded by a historic olive grove composed of more than 1500 plants.

It was built in the Augustan age, between the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD and abandoned during the III century AD. The building has been called "Grotte di Catullo" to indicate the collapsed rooms, covered by vegetation. The archaeological area extends over a broad spur of rock and is crossed by a dense network of paths.

Some of these paths are usable by people with motor disabilities and are indicated by orientation signs with the wheelchair symbol: they are footpaths with a clay ground and fine gravel, minimum 80 cm wide, with stretches with a maximum slope of 8%. These paths take you to the floor of the villa, on top of the hill: from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the entire archaeological area and Lake Garda. The paths leading to the foundations of the villa are not accessible, as they mostly consist of steep steps. In the archaeological area there are 4 information panels in three languages (Italian, English and German).

Archaeological Museum of Sirmione
The Museum is a support to the visit of the Roman villa and the other archaeological finds preserved in Sirmione and collects the testimonies of the oldest history of the town. It is located near the entrance to the archaeological area. The Museum can be reached from the ticket office, through an accessible path with some slightly sloping stretches. It has two floors.

The ground floor can be visited without obstacles. It hosts glass showcases placed at various heights and a touch-screen monitor with a multilingual video (in Italian, English and German) on the Grotte di Catullo and other archaeological sites of the lower Garda area. The first floor hosts a review of historical photographs on the archaeological excavations of the area.

It can be reached by an elevator that must be activated with a key by the museum staff; the elevator has the following features:

  • door width 85 cm;  cabin: inner space; 135x150 cm
  • lift level buttons panel with embossed Braille printing (maximum height 110 cm)
  • acoustic and visual signal of arrival at a floor
  • emergency bell.

Toilet facilities
The toilets are located outside the Archaeological Museum, next to its entrance on the ground floor. The toilets can be reached from the ticket office, through an accessible path with some slightly sloping stretches.

The toilet equipped for people with disabilities has the following characteristics:

  • a hinged door (80 cm wide)
  • wall-mounted washbasin (clear space in front: 120 cm)
  • floor-standing toilet (seat height 50 cm; clear space:  in front: 150 cm, on the right side 120 cm; on the left side: 20 cm; handle on the right side).
