Exhibition path of the Area
The archaeological area of the Caves of Catullus is located in an exceptional panoramic position, on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula. The exhibition path includes the open-air archaeological area called the Caves of Catullus and the Archaeological Museum of Sirmione. Throughout the archaeological area of the Caves of Catullus, the ground is uneven and alternates between compact earth and paths in grass.
Caves of Catullus
The archaeological area of the Caves of Catullus preserves the remains of one of the largest Roman villas in northern Italy. Located in a panoramic position, it overlooks the entire basin of Lake Garda. The villa covers an area of about 2 hectares and is surrounded by a historic olive grove consisting of over 1500 plants. It was built in the Augustan age, at the end of the 1st century BC, and abandoned during the 3rd century AD. The structures were called "Caves of Catullus" to indicate the collapsed rooms, covered by vegetation, which could be entered as natural cavities. The archaeological area extends over a large rocky spur and is crossed by a dense network of paths. Some of these paths are accessible to people with motor disabilities and are indicated by orientation signs with the wheelchair symbol: these are paths with a surface of compacted earth and fine gravel, at least 80 cm wide, with various sections sloping usually less than 8%. They lead to the floor of the villa, at the top of the hill: from here you can enjoy a splendid panorama of the entire archaeological area and Lake Garda. The paths leading to the foundations of the villa, at the base of the hill, are not accessible as they consist of steep stairs. In the archaeological area, there are informative totems in three languages (Italian, English, and German).
Archaeological Museum
The Museum supports the visit to the Roman villa and other archaeological remains preserved in Sirmione and collects evidence of the oldest history of the town and the surrounding area. It is located just after the ticket office premises, at a lower level than the floor levels; it has some slightly sloping sections (descent to approach, ascent to move away).
Elevator
The elevator located in the first balcony is activated exclusively by museum staff and has the following characteristics:
- internal space of the cabin width 135 cm, depth 150 cm
- door width 85 cm
- internal control panel in Braille and relief with maximum height 110 cm
- acoustic signal of arrival at the floor, emergency bell.
Museum exhibition path
the museum exhibition is spread over two floors. Access to the museum is from the upper floor consisting of two balconies: the first hosts a review of historical photographs on the archaeological excavations of the area, the second deals with the theme of ancient wall paintings. The ground floor houses glass display cases placed at various heights and is visitable without obstacles.
Toilets
The toilets are located in the portico in front of the ground floor currently accessible only by elevator.
The two toilets for people with disabilities have the following characteristics:
- single swinging door (width 80 cm)
- suspended sink (front space 120 cm, mirror height 122 cm)
- floor-mounted toilet (height 50 cm, front space 150 cm, right lateral space 120 cm, left lateral space 20 cm, right handle).
- ample movement space for wheelchair users
Emergency exits
