The Old Cathedral, located next to the New Cathedral, was built in the eleventh century. Over the years it has undergone several expansions while retaining its original structure, making it one of the most important examples of circular Romanesque churches in Italy. The interior of the Old Cathedral is divided into zones located on different levels.
From the matronium, via a staircase of 14 steps (h 18 cm) visitors descend to the circular ambulatory which acts as the perimeter of the cathedral.
From the ambulatory, surpassing 10 steps (10 cm) it is possible to reach the Stalls of Santa Maria, from here it is necessary to can climb 7 steps (h 15 cm) and reach the presbytery. The choir and the apse can be reached by climbing a further 3 steps (h 19 cm).
From the stalls of Santa Maria down 19 consecutive steps (h 17 cm) visitors reach the Crypt of St. Filastrio, which houses the relics of the Brescia saint who lived in the fourth century. Inside the crypt there are no obstacles to mobility.
In the cathedral there are pews, kneeling stools and chairs (h 48 cm).
