Getting there by public transport
The Cistercian Abbey of Piona is located in the upper lake of Como, at the end of the Olgiasca peninsula. Olgiasca (about 2.5 km away) is served by the “Lecco Trasporti” bus line. (for more information, please visit: http://www.leccotrasporti.it)

Parking area
The complex includes the church, the cloister and a cave for praying. Outside the complex there is a large parking area and the abbey can be reached by walking about 50 meters over a paving cobblestones. The religious complex is accessed by passing through a single-leaf gate (114 cm wide).

Church entrance and cloister
Four consecutive steps (10 cm high), that can be overcome with a ramp (230 cm long, slope of 13%, handrail on the right side, 80 cm above the ground), takes you to the abbey. The entrance to the church (on the left side) has 2 steps (15 cm each) and two consecutive double leaf doors: the first one is 71 cm wide each and the second one is 88 cm wide each.

The entrance to the cloister is on the right and presents in succession: 2 steps (11 cm each), a double leaf door (91 cm wide each) and 3 consecutive steps (16 cm high each).

Information for visitors:
Free guided tours for groups only on reservation from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 14.30 to 18.00. The Abbey is open every day from 8.30 to 18.30.

Getting around
The church, built on a single nave, can be visited without barriers and has benches with kneelers (seat height: 45 cm). To access the altar, you need to overcome 2 steps (15 cm each).

Cloister and Chapter House
The quadrangular cloister, built around 1242, is the landmark of the monastic complex.
The source and the tree located in the centre of the cloister represent the source of delights and the tree of life of the earthly paradise.  In order to reach the Chapter House from the cloister, you must overcome 2 steps (15 cm each) and a double leaf door (74 cm wide each).

Grotta di Loudes (Cave of Loudes)
The cave, located about 20 meters from the church, can be reached by a flat path with a compact surface surrounded by olive trees; near the cave there are 10 benches (seat height: 44 cm); to enter the cave it is necessary to pass 8 consecutive steps (18 cm each) with handrail on both sides (80 cm high above the ground).

In order to get to the Prayer room, near the cave, you have to overcome 3 more steps (15 cm each) and a hinged door (91 cm wide).

Orientation signage:
In the building, there are directional arrows with high contrast and large lettering (at least 7 cm).

Toilet facilities
The toilets are located about 50 meters from the entrance gate and have the following features:

  • vestibule with 85 cm wide passageway
  • wall mounted washbasin (clear space in front: 120 cm)
  • bathroom with a step (10 cm high) and a hinged door (73 cm wide)
  • squat toilet with vertical handles
  • high contrast symbols indicating toilet facilities, positioned at eye level, using medium to large size letters.

The toilet for people with disabilities is located at the men's toilets and has the following characteristics:

  • vestibule with 85 cm wide passageway
  • wall mounted washbasin (clear space in front: 120 cm)
  • bathroom with a hinged door (84 cm wide)
  • floor standing toilet (clear space: in front 118 cm, on the right side 90 cm, on the left side 47 cm, vertical handle on the left side and handrail along the perimeter)
  • high contrast symbols indicating toilet facilities, positioned at eye level, using medium to large size letters.

Cafeteria
The Cafeteria, located about 30 meters from the church, can be reached by following a downhill path (length: 20 meters and slope of 10%) and has a counter (112 cm high). It is open only during the spring-summer period

Shop and Viewpoint
The shop and the viewpoint are on the left side just before the entrance gate. They can be reached by passing 7 consecutive steps (13 cm high each, handrail on the right side at 80 cm above the ground) or alternatively via a ramp (length: 4.5 meters, slope of 6%).
The entrance to the shop (counter height: 113 cm) has a step (3 cm high each) and a double leaf door (86 cm wide each).
The viewpoint, which offers a nice view of the lake, does not have any obstacles to mobility.
