Exhibition layout
The building dates back to the early 20th century, and was originally the headquarters of the financial inspectorate, which explains its name, Palazzo delle Paure (Palace of Fear). The temporary exhibitions are housed on the first floor.
The second floor contains the permanent Lecco Municipal Contemporary Art Collection, with works by important local and Italian contemporary artists (including Castellani, Baj, Scanavino, Rotella and Pomodoro). This floor also houses the Graphic and Photographic Section.
The third floor houses the Osservatorio Alpinistico Lecchese (Lecco Mountain Observatory), a high-tech exhibition area on the world of mountains. The observatory contains the interactive model entitled "A Land Between Lakes and Mountains" (h 77 cm), which presents a map of the territory between Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. A touch screen monitor can be used to discover the history and traditions of the territory. The History and People section has 5 screens with headphones (h 100 cm), which present videos and films on the history of mountaineering in the Lecco area (some with background music and others with commentary in Italian language, with no subtitles).
This is followed by the Evolution of Materials and From Lecco to the Great Mountains sections, which describe the equipment and expeditions of mountaineers from Lecco from the past to the present. An interactive globe shows the international expeditions undertaken.
The visit to the observatory is completed by a climbing wall and a totem with suggestions for those interested in exploring the surrounding areas of Lecco.
