Interior Spaces
The Duomo Nuovo, dedicated to the Assumption, is located between the Broletto and the Duomo Vecchio. Built on the site of the early Christian church of San Pietro de Dom, starting in 1604, it was completed two centuries later. Its imposing dome (the third largest in Italy after those of St. Peter's and Santa Maria del Fiore) was designed by architect Luigi Cagnola between 1815 and 1825. The central nave and side aisles are obstacle-free, the church has benches with kneelers and chairs (h 47 cm). To reach the altar, three consecutive steps (h 16 cm) must be overcome.
On the right side aisle, there are: the altar of the Crucifix, the chapel of the Most Holy, and the altar of St. Apollonius; to visit them, two steps must be overcome (h 14 cm and h 17 cm). On the left side aisle, there are: the Baptistery and the Monument to Paolo VI, a statue depicting the Pope kneeling on the threshold of the Holy Door; to visit it, one step must be overcome (h 18 cm).
On the right side of the altar is the Zorzi Chapel, which is accessed by two consecutive steps (h 15 cm).
