Exhibition layout
The Certosa di Pavia is a beautiful monastery whose building began at the end of 1300 by the will of Visconti and completed a century later by the Sforza.
Certosa is home to the Cistercian monks, who run guided tours and cultivate the surrounding fields.
The complex of Certosa open to the public includes the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Chiostro Piccolo (Small Cloister) and the Chiostro Grande (Great Cloister).
The 14 chapels that overlook the side aisles of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie all have a step (h 12 cm).
The church has chairs (h 46 cm) and descriptive panels (h 160 cm from the ground) in different languages (Italian, English, German and French).
From the central nave, passed the two-winged transept gate (72 cm wide each), tourists can reach two specular altars. The one on the left houses the funeral monument of Ludovico il Moro and Beatrice d'Este del Solari (1497).
To reach the main altar and the choir, it is necessary to pass two consecutive steps (h 17 cm) and a double swing door (width 125 cm each).
From the right apse, going about 15 meters and passing a double swing door (90 cm wide each) visitors reach the small cloister. From the small cloister passing a double swing gate (120 cm wide each), it is possible to reach the large cloister (about 100 meters wide and 120 meters long), which houses the monks' cells.
The 24 cells have two consecutive steps (h 12 cm), with a single swing door (width 90 cm) and internal spaces with openings of about 70 cm.
