Getting there by public transport
There is no public transport near the archaeological area of ¿¿Castelseprio which is located outside the town.

The church of Santa Maria foris portas can be visited on request. The visit is allowed to a maximum of 22 people at a time for about 20 minutes (longer visits must be agreed previously).

Itinerary
The visit to the Castrum includes the Antiquarium (Museum), the church of Santa Maria foris portas, the archaeological area with the remains of the Basilica of San Giovanni and the visitor centre. The medieval ruins of the Castrum of Castelseprio have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The castrum, built on the road connecting Novara to Como on top of a knoll protected by a wall, had military functions until the thirteenth century. The archaeological area preserves significant examples of military architecture and also includes the Torba complex (FAI).

Reception
The visitor centre is located at the entrance of the archaeological area near the parking area.
The entrance has 1 step (8 cm high) and a hinged door (100 cm wide). Inside there are the InfoPoint (counter height: 96 cm) and a room with chairs (seat height: 41 cm) where documentary films on the castrum are projected.
Under the porch, there are information panels (h 100 cm) on the history of the park and on the itinerary of the visit.
The staff offers information and reception services.
On the right side of the visitor centre there is a refreshment area with vending machines.

The Castrum
The Castrum includes the remains of religious and civil buildings (fortified houses, wooden raised houses).

Entrance
A double gate (150 cm wide each) gives you access to the large archaeological area with the remains of the basilica of San Giovanni, of the baptistery, of the church of San Paolo, of the house of the canons and of the convent of San Giovanni.

Getting around
The visit to the excavations develops on flat paths with a compact gravel surface. Along the way, there are descriptive panels (100 cm high above the ground) and the park has several benches (seat height: 40 cm).
The archaeological area that develops along the perimeter wall, however, has different levels, steps and uneven paths in compact surface and grass.

The Antiquarium (museum)
From the parking area you reach the Antiquarium via a flat path of about 300 meters with a compact gravel surface.

Entrance
The Antiquarium can be accessed by passing in succession: a double leaf gate (125 cm wide each), a ramp (5 meters long, slope of 4%), a threshold (2,5 cm high) and a hinged door (120 cm wide).

Exhibition itinerary
The itinerary develops into 8 rooms on the ground floor. Along the walls of the museum are descriptive panels (100 cm high above the floor). The passageways between the rooms are equipped with ramps (length 120 cm, slope of 5%).
Room 1 has a large model (56 cm high above the ground) which reconstructs the original topographical and morphological layout of the archaeological site.

Room 2 shows finds from the Bronze and Iron Age (ceramic objects and artefacts related to textile activity) placed in showcases (60 cm and 120 cm high above the ground).

In room 8 there is an interactive multimedia table (78 cm high above the ground).

The Church of Santa Maria foris portas
The church, surrounded by vegetation, stands on a hill and can be reached from the visitor centre along a 100 m. path on a slight slope with a compact gravel surface.

Entrance
Visitors in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility should ask the park's porter to open the entire entrance door of the church (total width: 182 cm), as the part that is usually open is too small (59 cm wide).
The entrance to the church has a sloping ramp (length 81 cm, slope of 7%)

Getting around

The church is famous for the peculiar frescoes of the central apse dating back to the Dark Ages. You reach the apse by passing a ramp (length 90 cm, slope of 4%). There are descriptive panels at different heights (60 cm and 115 cm).
The left apse can be reached by passing a step (14 cm high) while the right apse has a step (10 cm high).

Orientation signage
In the Antiquarium and in the entire archaeological area there are directional arrows with large and well contrasted lettering (at least 7 cm).

 Toilet facilities
There are two toilets equipped for people with disabilities. The first one is in the Antiquarium, on the left side of the first hall, and has the following characteristics:

  • vestibule with hinged door (90 cm wide)
  • toilet with sliding door (90 cm wide)
  • wall-mounted washbasin (clear space in front: 165 cm)
  • floor-standing toilet (clear space: in front 117 cm; on the right side 158 cm; on the left side 17 cm; horizontal handlebar on the left side of the toilet and handrail on the right side)
  • high contrast symbols indicating toilet facilities, positioned at eye level, using medium to large size letters.

The second equipped toilet is located to the right of the visitor centre, after the refreshment area; it can be reached by passing a ramp (length 90 cm, slope of 6%) and has the following characteristics:

  • vestibule with hinged door (99 cm wide)
  • toilet with hinged door (89 cm wide)
  • wall-mounted washbasin (clear space in front: 137 cm)
  • floor-standing toilet (clear space: in front 132 cm, on the right side 134 cm, on the left side 21 cm, horizontal handlebar on right side, vertical handlebar on left side and handrail on both sides)
  • high contrast symbols indicating toilet facilities, positioned at eye level, using medium to large size letters.

Picnic area
In the parking are, in front of the visitor centre, there is a large picnic area that has 4 rectangular wooden tables (clear space below: 64 cm) and 8 benches (seat height: 27 cm).
